Task: As part of the Matariki festival, there is a two day Kapa Haka competition. The haka is a traditional war dance that Maori performed before going into battle. The haka is now performed by children/adults in the community and by professional sporting teams, including our national rugby team, the ‘All Blacks.’  The All Blacks have performed various haka over the years. Watch the following three haka videos (1 – 3) and, on your blog, list the haka videos in order from best (#1) to worst (#3). There are no right or wrong answers ☺

Task: After visiting Shag Point, you hop back in the van and drive all the way up the east coast of the south island until you reach the town of Picton. You get out of the van and onto the Interislander ferry. It travels back across the Cook Strait to Wellington. Wellington is the capital city of New Zealand and every winter the city hosts a huge Matariki festival to celebrate the Maori New Year. This year part of the festival is being held at Te Papa, a big museum in Wellington. White patches of cloud covering the sky. A mixture of green and blue ocean. My stomach was full of butterflies. I was biting my lip feeling nervous. We reached our destination. The grass was so cosy and relaxing. I was so pleased to be here.

Task: You and your tour group have enjoyed your day in the mountains but you’re ready for a change of scenery. You ask Curious Kiwi to take you to Central Otago, a region of the south island with lots of rolling hills and flat, brown grasslands. While in Central Otago, you decide to join the Otago Central Rail Trail – a 150 km long cycle trail. Curious Kiwi and I (Rachel) cycled the Rail Trail in April and we loved it! On your blog, tell us whether you would like to cycle the Otago Rail Trail one day. Does it sound like fun? Why or why not?

Work:To be really honest I wouldn’t be interested in going to this place. It doesn’t sound like fun to me because I’m kind of the lazy type😂. I think others would be interested but i’m not into things like that.

Task: After a few hours in the car, you, your group and Curious Kiwi arrive at your first stop – The Lewis Pass Scenic Reserve. It is a beautiful, regional park located at the base of the Southern Alps. You and your group get out of the van and follow Curious Kiwi. He is going to lead you on a short walk through the park. As you start walking, you notice a really cool looking tree on the side of the trail and you stop to take a closer look. When you turn back, the group (and Curious Kiwi) is nowhere to be found. Eek! You are all alone in the middle of a strange forest. For this activity write a short story (8-10 sentences) about what might happen next. Please be sure to include lots of details about what you might be feeling, seeing and doing after you realise that you are all alone in the forest…

“Uhhh, guys !?”

Looking at the area we were all at, I couldn’t see anybody except big green trees. I was really nervous because it was my first ever time here. Slowly as I tiptoed looking for my group I could hear people grinning, “Come on guys” I said, the grinning stopped. As I kept on inspecting I could sense i’m near them. I thought to myself if they could be hiding from me, I wasn’t really to sure if they were or not. I was feeling insecure, I kept on walking towards the big green tree. I slightly went pass the tree, “BOO” they all screamed and laughed at me. “That is so not funny” I said to them. I was so satisfied.

Task: Hector’s dolphins are a very special native animal found only in New Zealand. They are the smallest dolphin in the world measuring 1.5 metres long and they are quite rare. Sadly, many Hector’s dolphins are killed every year when they get caught in large fishing nets and can’t escape. Some people have argued that fishermen shouldn’t be allowed to fish in Farewell Spit in order to protect the dolphins living there. What do you think? On your blog, tell us whether you think that fishing in Farewell Spit should be banned (stopped).

Work:

In my opinion I would say fishing should ‘stop’. The reason why I say this is because I feel sorry for the animals being endangered by us humans.. We should stop using big nets for fishing because the fishermen's are also capturing other animals. I feel sad for those fishes who gets killed for us to eat.

Task: After a morning of learning about beached whales in Golden Bay, you and your group are driven to a nearby town, Nelson, to watch a special movie called ‘Whale rider.’ It is a famous movie about a young girl who was born and raised in New Zealand. Watch the following movie trailers for Whale Rider: Whale Rider trailer #1 and Whale Rider Trailer #2 and then write a summary of the movie on your blog. What is it about? Be sure to also give the movie a rating out of 5 based on the trailer [1 = bad movie, 2 = okay movie, 3 = pretty good, 4 = good movie, 5 = excellent movie].

Work:

This movie trailer was about a leader who came on a whale. They were wait for a baby to become their chief but then the baby died but the other twin didn’t. They were waiting for someone to come up and have the confidence to come up. I would rate this movie trailer 2{Okay Movie}.

Task: Farewell Spit has been in the news recently as a number of whales accidentally swam into the spit and became stuck on the beach. They were unable to swim back to the ocean because the water was too shallow. Many local people tried to save the ‘beached’ whales. Please follow this Farewell Spit link to learn more about what happened. On your blog, describe what the local people did to try and save the beached whales.

Work:

The local people tried to keep the whales alive by getting tins and filling it up with water so the whales can live. Also the local people were helping the whales, and that’s really thoughtful of them.

Task: On your blog, tell us whether you agree that New Zealand should be predator free. In your opinion, is it right to kill all of the predators (eg. possums) or should we just leave them alone? On your blog tell us what you think and give us, at least, three reasons why you think this way.

Work:

Is it right to kill all of the predators such as Possums? My answer to this is no, I say no all animals regardless do not deserve to die or to be killed by forcement. However there are many ways and options that we can look at into decreasing the number of damages caused by predators but mainly possums. My first reason as I believe they should be killed is becauses that’s plain cruelty and nasty of someone to do that, since they are protected in Australia as native species, the only best and responsible move to do is to send them back, in this way no one gets to die for both the possums and our land. Secondly I believe and strongly agree that we get rid of them as soon as we can. Our dairy products are what keeps us functioning during the week especially our Milk, however as these possums and predators sticking around they are injecting our cattles with bovine tuberculosis which can harm our dairy industries alongside the people of New Zealand. Lastly because the government is having to spend millions and millions of money on Possum control, which I highly disagree with as that money can be wisely spent on something more important.

Task: Curious Kiwi, a native New Zealand bird, is your tour guide for today. He is going to take you to visit the Otorohanga Kiwi House and Native Bird Park where many of his aunties and uncles currently live. The bird park is a five hour drive from Dargaville so you hit the road right after breakfast and arrive in Otorohanga at lunch time. As you walk through the birdhouse you learn about the work being done to conserve and protect the native birds of New Zealand. You decide to help out by ‘adopting’ a native animal. Visit the ‘Adopt a Critter page’ on the Otorohanga bird house website to choose one animal to adopt. On your blog, tell us the name of the animal that you chose and a little bit about them. What kind of animal are they? What do they eat? Where do they normally live? You can use Google to help you with your research.

Animal I’m going to Adopt: Tuatara

Facts about the animal:

I have chosen to adopt a Tuatara because it is one of New Zealand’s most common native animal. The Tuatara is  known to be the longest reptile that lives in comparison to the remaining reptiles that lives in New Zealand. Tuataras are known to survive on off shore island only because of the rodents or in other words, mammals causing stress such as wild cats, rats, hamsters and pigs. Tuataras are reptiles that does not consume food on a daily basis or constantly as compared to other animals. Tuatara are carnivores which means they only eat weta, moth and beetles. However there are times that they are able to eat small lizards also.

Task: Your tour of New Zealand is going to start right here in Auckland. Watch the Tourist video for Auckland to learn about the awesome things that you can see and do in the city. Once you’ve finished, choose your favorite five activities from the video and list them on your blog.  

Work:

First Activity: Museum

I would first go to the Museum. I would go to the Museum because I would want to learn more about things back then and how things used to work. Also, I would want to learn about the war and other cultures. I’ve only been to the Museum once with my old school.

Second Activity: Native Rainforest

My second choice is going to the Native Rainforest. I would go to this place because I want to study about the native things in New Zealand. I would also want to go to the Native Forest with my family and discover things.

Third Activity: Auckland Zoo

This is my third choice, going to the Zoo. I would go to the Zoo because I would want to study/learn about all kinds of animals. Also, I would want to go to the Zoo because I want to see other animals I haven’t seen.

Fourth Activity: Rainbows End

My fourth choice is going to Rainbows End. I would want to go to this place because I want to go on the rides. I also would want to go to Rainbows End because I want to fight my fears of heights.

Fifth Activity: Sky Tower

My last activity is going to the Sky Tower. My reason for picking the Sky Tower is because I want to get a better view of Auckland, at the top of the Sky Tower.

Bonus - This year two new sports are being added to the Paralympic Games. They are canoeing and triathlon. In the triathlon the athletes must swim 750 metres, cycle for 20 kilometres, and then run for 5 kilometres. Paralympic athletes may also compete in other sports including archery, boccia, football, judo, powerlifting, rowing, sailing, swimming, sitting volleyball, track cycling, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair fencing, wheelchair rugby, and wheelchair tennis. To learn more about all of the Paralympic sports, please visit the 2016 Paralympic Games website.

Imagine that you are on the Paralympic Committee and you have been asked to create one new sport to add to the competition for this year. Use your awesome imagination to design a brand new Paralympic sport. Please remember that some of the athletes will not be able to walk or run and others may be blind or deaf. “The Travelling Egg”

2. A brief description of how you play the sport

The game that I have come up up with is called "The travelling egg". The Travelling egg is suitable for the Paralympic Athletes to play. This game can be played by either Deaf,Blind or anyone who's in a Wheelchair. For participants that are Deaf, the game can be introduced to them through hand signals. In which to say, this game consists of an egg being put on a spoon. By this, the participant playing needs to make sure the egg sits on the spoon until the finishing line. However, for the participants that are blind they do get a head start of 8 seconds.

3. Three rules for the sport

• Rule 1) If the egg falls off the spoon you're out
• Rule 2) One hand behind your back
• Rule 3) No RUNNING!
